Background of the Study
Social cohesion is a cornerstone for peaceful coexistence and sustainable development in multi-ethnic communities. In Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, Kebbi State, diverse ethnic groups share the same geographical space, often facing challenges related to cultural differences and social fragmentation. Adult education has emerged as a promising avenue to promote social cohesion by facilitating cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. Through targeted programs that emphasize shared values, communication skills, and conflict resolution, adult education can help bridge ethnic divides and foster a sense of community belonging (Suleiman, 2023). These initiatives are designed to provide a platform where individuals from various backgrounds learn together, exchange ideas, and develop mutual respect. Recent studies have shown that communities that engage in lifelong learning exhibit higher levels of social trust and collaboration (Dada, 2024). In Birnin Kebbi, adult education programs have been implemented to address the challenges of social fragmentation by highlighting the importance of unity and collective responsibility. The curricula often include modules on local history, cultural heritage, and modern governance, which are crucial in reinforcing a shared identity among community members (Ibrahim, 2025). Moreover, these programs leverage participatory learning techniques such as group discussions, role-playing, and community projects to encourage active engagement and solidarity. The integration of modern communication tools in these educational initiatives further enhances their reach and effectiveness, allowing for more inclusive participation across different ethnic groups. As communities in Birnin Kebbi continue to evolve, the role of adult education in strengthening social ties becomes increasingly significant. This study seeks to investigate how adult education contributes to social cohesion in multi-ethnic settings by examining its impact on interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution, and community participation. By drawing on recent empirical research and local case studies, the study aims to provide evidence-based insights that can inform policy and program development aimed at enhancing social unity in diverse communities (Suleiman, 2023; Dada, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of social cohesion, multi-ethnic communities in Birnin Kebbi continue to experience challenges related to ethnic tension, mistrust, and occasional conflict. One of the major issues is the lack of effective communication and mutual understanding among different ethnic groups, which hampers collaborative efforts and community development (Suleiman, 2023). Although adult education programs have been introduced with the aim of fostering unity, there is limited empirical evidence on how these initiatives impact social cohesion in the area. Moreover, the diversity in cultural practices and historical grievances often results in resistance to collective learning and interethnic dialogue (Dada, 2024). The absence of sustained and comprehensive educational interventions means that any improvements in social cohesion are sporadic and not deeply rooted in community practices. Additionally, logistical challenges such as inadequate funding, limited accessibility to educational resources, and a lack of trained facilitators further exacerbate the situation (Ibrahim, 2025). These challenges underscore the need for a systematic evaluation of the role of adult education in promoting social cohesion. This study aims to address these gaps by exploring how adult education influences interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution, and collaborative community activities in multi-ethnic settings. It will also investigate the barriers that impede the successful integration of diverse ethnic groups through education and propose strategies to overcome these challenges. By doing so, the research seeks to provide actionable recommendations that can help policymakers and community leaders foster a more harmonious and united society in Birnin Kebbi (Suleiman, 2023; Dada, 2024).
